Why Is SEO Important For Vegan Businesses?

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and is pretty essential in today’s world of online business. Amongst other things, it helps you to gain traffic and conversions to your website, by helping you rank higher on search engine results.


“Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose” (The Vegan Society, 1988).

As you’re probably aware, the population of vegans has grown surprisingly quickly over the last few years. The latest statistics reveal that in 2019, over 600,000 people identified as vegans in the UK, which is quadruple the amount that was recorded in 2014. Furthermore, American vegans grew by 600% from 2014 to 2017, when there were a whopping 19.6 million of them! Whether for ethical, environmental, or health reasons, it is clear to see that veganism is a growing trend.

Alongside this population growth, more and more people are opening their own vegan companies and business is booming! As demand grows, supply naturally follows. Vegan markets and products are popping up everywhere and there is even an increase in businesses in the most unlikely of countries, e.g. South Korea.

Despite the rise in demand, it can be difficult to get your new business recognised and discovered online. Veganism is still niche and the top spots on search engine results are often taken by non-vegan businesses. Furthermore, there is the problem presented by corporate business…

When our parents were young, there was no such thing as a “vegan sausage roll” at Greggs. Big business just wasn’t interested in providing options for those that chose not to eat animal products – it wasn’t profitable enough. However, as mentioned above, demand has risen and pressure was piled onto companies to supply.

Nowadays, supermarkets in the UK such as Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose, all sell a large range of plant-based products. This is great news for the consumer – who wouldn’t want more options on their weekly shop?! It doesn’t stop there; restaurants, clothing shops and cosmetics brands are all cashing in on veganism. Investment in plant-based initiatives has been substantial, with plenty of hedge-funds, grants and stock market launches sprouting up all over the place. The improvement in product accessibility has been incredible – things have never been easier for vegans!

Bad News for Vegan Business Owners

However, this increase in corporate supply spells bad news for a lot of independent vegan businesses. Imagine that you had a vegan sausage roll business and your website is already building traction. Then, lo and behold, Gregg’s announces that they are going to sell their own version. Unfortunately, their website has higher authority than yours, their SEO is on point, and they have an experienced digital marketing team to promote their new product. Top this off with a Piers Morgan tantrum and BAM! They’ve taken all the top spots on Google search results and your traffic has been reduced to a minimum.

SEO for Vegan Businesses

Due to the high authority of corporate business websites, search engines will often rank them higher in their search results. Therefore, it becomes important for smaller, independent companies to work harder to achieve those top positions. It is highly recommended to spend time creating keyword-optimised content, reaching out to key influencers from your industry, building your internal and external links, promoting your business on social media and performing other effective online marketing methods. It’s hard work, but will help your vegan business to grow its online presence.
